Future U

It may come as a surprise to you, but only 44% of high school students in Kingston think that attending post secondary education is important. This is especially alarming because the it is becoming increasingly difficult to start a career with only a high school diploma. In fact, in the next 10 years, 66% of all new jobs will require more than a high school diploma. [Read more...]

Green HEAT

The average building is overspending on energy costs by 30%. This affects non-profit organizations the most, as every dollar spent on energy consumption is one dollar less that they have available to spend on more important initiatives. Unfortunately, many people/organizations are unaware that this is the case and even if they were aware, it is difficult for them to do anything about it. [Read more...]

Food Bank

There are 6,400 individuals who use the food bank every year, 40% of the recipients of the food are children. Kingston’s local Partners in Mission Food Bank (PIMF),  does a lot with a little but as the need increases and donations decrease, it becomes a struggle.

In an ironic twist, PIMF is forced to turn away  thousands of pounds of frozen food donations because they have no means of storing them.   We have created four separate initiatives to help the PIMF to feed hungry citizens in our community. [Read more...]

MY Turn

There are over 2000 bursaries available to students at St. Lawrence College. However, it is unfortunate that not one of these bursaries are specific to the January intake students. They tend to lose out on opportunities to apply for bursaries because the application deadline is September 30th, before they are even at school.

In the past, the government has offered a program that will match any monies put into a bursary fund. So, $10,000 turns into $20,000 allowing this bursary to be given out on a yearly basis as long as St. Lawrence College is standing! Recently however, the government has notified us that as of March 31st, this program will no longer be available. Having said that, there is only so much money left for this and is on a first come, first serve basis. That means we need to act fast!

Kyle Geldart (SIFE’s Investment Club project manager) and Jock Pirrie (Economics Professor), has taken on this task and has currently raised just over $6500 but in order for this project to work, we need a minimum of $10,000. So we need your help! If you or someone you know is willing/able to make a donation please do so now so that the donation will be matched. Tax receipts will be provided for the donation. Cheques can be made payable to St. Lawrence College (My Turn Endowment).

For more information please contact Jock Pirrie at jpirrie@sl.on.ca
