Did you know that the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) allots $7.49 for students to eat a day? And did you know that students are expected to know this and keep within this budget? According to a recent CBC broadcast, some people think that it is impossible to eat nutritional meals on this little amount of money. We found the solution!
This program teaches students to shop for and cook nutritional meals for only $7 a day. This is especially important as the price of food has increased by 15% (as quoted by the World Bank), but the living wage has stayed the same.
After this 1 hour seminar, students can stock a pantry and stay on a budget while eating wholesome, nutritious meals.
Food Cents has empowered 78 students to make the most of their food budget. In the future, we will be creating food bank specific cookbooks which will allow food bank hamper recipients to stretch the food they have received. It also gives them the knowledge to continue cooking on a budget when they get back on their feet.
